Hilal Sami Hilal, was born in Vitória, Brazil, to a Syrian family. His early work in the 1970s, began with drawings and watercolors, until Hilal decided to explore Japanese techniques of making paper. With a trip to Japan, his research intensified, leading to a second visit to the county in the 80s. Crossing cultural influences between East and West, between modern Western tradition and ancient Islamic art, he made his first lace. The lace was made with a unique material consisting of recycled cotton pulp, mixed rags, pigments, resin, iron powder and aluminum. The work, placed a short distance from the wall, is enhanced by its projected shadows. Some of his artworks are made in acrylic resin, creating the same visual effect. He participated at Panorama da Arte Brasileira, MAM/SP. In 2007- 2008 a major exhibition of his work curated by Paulo Herkenhoff, was showcased at the Vale Museum, Vitória, Espírito Santo. In 2010 he had a solo exhibition at the Museum Lasar Segall, conceptualized by Jorge Schwartz and Marcelo Monzani, with exhibiton text by Aracy Amaral. Hilal`s work has been exhibited in institutions around the world: Mostra Brasileira, Surçok Museum, Lebanon, 1998; Art / Identity in Sigbur, Germany, 2000; The Thread Unraveled: Contemporary Brazilian Art, El Museo del Barrio, NY, 2000; Constantini Foundation; MALBA, Buenos Aires, 2002. He has participated the group exhibition Tubulezen in Papier - Paper Art 8 in Hoesh Leopold Museum in Durem, Germany. He was awarded the Papier Kunst (Art Prize in Paper), which previous recipients include Joseph Beuys and Robert Rauschenberg. Hilal lives and works in Vitória, Brazil.
